Paloma Rodriguez and Maximilliano Alvarado at Dance Blvd. Oct. 11th and 12th.
Paloma Rodriguez and Maximilliano Alvarado came to San Jose for the first time On Friday, October 11, 2019, to teach the pre-milonga workshop and also perform during the milonga. They returned the next day, Saturday, October 12, to teach two workshops.
The pre-milonga class was: Turns and contraturns in close and open embrace.
The two workshops on Saturday were:
1:00 - 2:30 Tango Workshop : Sacadas for Social Dance
2:45 - 4:15 Milonga Workshop : Accelerations and Traspies
The pre-milonga class was one of the largest I've seen at Dance Blvd. (30 people?) and many of those attended their Wed. workshops (15 for the first and 19 for the second?). Followers slightly outnumbered followers at both.
They have a big fan base in San Jose and the fans were out and loud during all performances and workshops. It is highly likely they'll come again to Dance Blvd. which is great news for people like me living in the south bay.
In the basic pre-milonga class they taught what I call "hybrid" toe-heel walking. The toe brushes the floor always and then as the last instant when stepping forward the toe comes up and the heel hits the floor first. And they emphasize collecting the knees when walking.
Their teaching technique for handling large classes is to use what I call "cascades". Followers line up against one wall while leaders line up against another and leaders pair up with who ever the next follower happens to be. So all leaders are forced to dance with all followers in random order, no exclusivity. That is something to be prepared for if you expect to only dance with your partner during the class. In a Paloma and Maxi class that is NOT going to happen.
As pairs of dancers pass them on the floor they will roam the floor answering questions and solving problems. This means that for a one and half hour milonga trespie class you could well be dancing milonga constantly for over an hour! Be ready.
